Carissa M. Baker-Smith, MD, MS, MPH, has been appointed Director of Preventive Cardiology for the Nemours Cardiac Center at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. In this role, Dr. Baker-Smith will provide oversight for the growth, development, and management of the program, and play a prominent role in promoting the cardiac center’s research and scholarly activity. She will also be actively involved in outreach and telehealth initiatives.
Dr. Baker-Smith is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where she obtained her medical degree and a master’s degree in cellular and molecular biology. She completed her internship, residency and fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. While at Duke, she also obtained a master’s degree in biostatistics from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Public Health, and completed a research fellowship at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in 2010.
Most recently, at the University of Maryland, Dr. Baker-Smith served as associate professor of pediatrics and as the primary pediatric cardiologist for the cardiovascular genetics program and the heart transplantation program.
Dr. Baker-Smith currently serves as Chair of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Atherosclerosis, Hypertension and Obesity in the Young (AHOY) subcommittee. She has a national and international reputation for her work in hypertension and lipid management.
