Nemours Cardiac Center Demonstrates Excellent Surgical Outcomes in Regional Report of Children’s Hospitals
Outcomes Exceed National Benchmarks
Our integrated team model, well-established clinical best practices, and commitment to quality and safety are rewarded by these outstanding results.

Wilmington, DE – This week, a report issued by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) published 2014-17 outcome data for regional children’s hospitals that do pediatric heart surgery. The report includes aggregate results over a four-year period to give a more complete picture of a hospital’s experience over time. Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children voluntarily participated in the report, providing its pediatric heart surgery statistics to the council. Hospitals reported survival rates at discharge for 10 benchmark procedures designated by the Society for Thoracic Surgery (STS).

The report shows that Nemours Cardiac Center exceeded survival rates for benchmark operations with zero mortality for many procedures, including: coarctation of aorta repair, Tetralogy of Fallot repair, the Glenn/Hemi-Fontan and Fontan procedures, the arterial switch operation, the Norwood procedure, and complete atrioventricular canal repair.

The Nemours Cardiac Center was lauded specifically for its neonatal operative procedures: over the four-year period, the mortality rate at Nemours was 4.7%, with a risk-adjusted rate of 3.3 %, while the expected rate of mortality was 11.8%, meaning the hospital’s risk-adjusted operative mortality rate for neonates was significantly lower (better) than expected.

“The Nemours Cardiac Center is pleased to have achieved exceptional surgical outcomes for the children we serve,” said cardiothoracic surgeon Christian Pizarro, MD, Director, Nemours Cardiac Center.  “Our integrated team model, well-established clinical best practices, and commitment to quality and safety are rewarded by these outstanding results. I am proud of our team and their tireless dedication to excellent, compassionate care.”

The STS standards are the best benchmarks currently available and represent a vital step towards transparency. Providing this information is important to families and that is why many hospitals, including Nemours, not only participate but also make outcomes information available on their websites.
