Jacksonville, FL (August 2, 2018) – Health care industry leaders will gather with elected officials, academics and nonprofit leaders in Washington, D.C., this October for a day-long discussion about the important connection between sustained economic strength and investments in children’s health care.
“We all know that the United States spends far too much on health care. The debate is about how to best address this challenge,” said David Bailey, MD, president and CEO of Nemours Children’s Health System. “At Nemours, we think we have the answer. Invest more in children’s health on the front end to deliver a healthy generation of adults, and spend far less on health care in the future.”
The conference is called “Pediatric Moneyball,” a nod to the book with a similar name about a baseball team that became successful by making strategic investments based on financial analysis and undervalued players. Despite initial resistance to the evidence-based approach, the results led to adoption across the league. The dialogue at this conference will also address evidence-based opportunities for making strategic investments in children’s health that will similarly lead to significant returns.
This one-day, invitation-only conference will bring together academic, public and private sector leaders in Washington, D.C., on October 11, 2018. Keynote Speakers include author Walter Isaacson and Gen. Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.).
Dr. Bailey has spent 40 years in pediatrics, including 13 as the CEO of Nemours. He grew up in a coal mining town in West Virginia and largely credits his family’s access to books when he was a young child with his success today. That early experience, among others, helped focus him on the true importance of investment in young children.
“We know that deliberate, sustained community investment in early education, literacy, chronic condition management, and mental health programming is a challenge in the current health care environment. If we commit to funding the most impactful programs for children, everyone is going to see a huge return on our collective investment. If we don’t, other countries will out-pace us in the decades to come,” Bailey said.
