Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware and Disney Bring Joy to Patients
Nemours Children’s Child Life Program Launches Interactive Disney-Themed Installations for Patients and Families.
“A lot of what we are trying to do here is provide an alternate focus of what’s going on in the hospital,” says Melissa Nicely, Child Life Specialist at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware. “Our collaboration with Disney has been an amazing way to connect what we’re trying to do in the hospital and make it a comfortable healing environment.”

Wilmington, DE (December 1, 2021) - Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware announced the launch of several Disney-themed installations thanks to Disney’s $100 million global commitment to reimagining the patient experience in children’s hospitals. This commitment comes to life by providing special opportunities for shared experiences, exploration, and play that ease the stress of a hospital stay.

In areas such as inpatient units and surgical waiting rooms, patients and their families can gaze through magic windows and watch delightful digital screens come to life with their favorite Disney characters. Other installations, such as Disney murals, further the magic in the form of augmented reality content that comes alive when patients use the Disney Team of Heroes app. Each interactive experience is designed to deliver comfort and joy to patients and families.

“A lot of what we are trying to do here is provide an alternate focus of what’s going on in the hospital,” says Melissa Nicely, Child Life Specialist at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware. “We don’t want kids to just sit and think about the hospital, we want them think about other things, fun things, things they’re comfortable and familiar with, things like Disney. Our collaboration with Disney has been an amazing way to connect what we’re trying to do in the hospital and make it a comfortable healing environment.”

Disney collaborated with Nemours Child Life Specialists to find innovative ways to ease moments of fear and anxiety by incorporating the familiarity of Disney characters into the hospital space. In addition to the interactive installations, patients and families will also get to enjoy the Disney mobile movie theater and the Disney Movie Moments program which provides access to movies while they’re still in the theatres.

Nemours will also receive Disney-themed Starlight Gowns and care packages, filled with fun activities and keepsakes such as room decals, journals and playing cards to allow children to personalize their hospital rooms.
