Statement on Senator Tom Carper’s Retirement Announcement

Nemours Children’s Health commends Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) for a lifetime of service and a record of strong leadership in support of our nation’s children and families.

As Delaware’s Governor, he elevated policies to address the needs of children and families by creating the Family Services Cabinet Council (FSCC). The FSCC helps coordinate services for families, ranging from workforce services to early childhood education programs to social service delivery. Then Governor Carper made frequent visits to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, where he would meet with patients, families and Nemours associates. He also invested in school-based health, an area he continued to focus on during his Senate career.

Nemours Children’s has appreciated our strong partnership on child health policy with Senator Carper. Notably, his bipartisan leadership helped secure key provisions in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (P.L. 117-159) to support youth mental health in schools and to promote telehealth. Additionally, for more than a decade, he has supported obesity prevention in the early care and education setting through the National Early Childcare Collaboratives Program, which Nemours operates in 11 states, including Delaware. He also introduced the KIDS Health Act, a bipartisan, bicameral bill to advance innovative payment and delivery models that support whole child health.

We have long counted on Senator Carper as a strong leader, voice, and advocate for Delaware’s children. Many of his efforts have helped Nemours go well beyond medicine for our patients and families. We look forward to continued collaboration as he finishes out his final Senate term and wish him the best upon his retirement.
