Nemours Children’s Health and Blessings in a Backpack partner to pack 1,000 healthy weekend meal packs for local school children

Orlando, Fla. (April 18, 2023)- Because it is estimated that one in every five children in Central Florida struggles with access to food, Nemours Children’s Health hosted a volunteer event with Blessings in a Backpack, a local nonprofit organization committed to reducing the food gap for school-aged children, to pack 1,000 healthy weekend meal packs to local students at Winegard Elementary enrolled in the free lunch program.

This event is part of Nemours Cares Week, a bi-annual week of impact service through employee volunteerism. Now in its 10th year, Nemours Cares provides a week of opportunities for associates to volunteer and help the communities in which they live.

During the celebration of its 10th year since opening in Orlando, last Fall, Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida announced that it has enhanced its partnership with Blessings in a Backpack. The partnership ensures that students enrolled in the free-lunch program will have nutritious foods on the weekends and during holiday breaks. Nemours Children’s has committed to providing food to eligible students at Winegard Elementary in Orange County, Boggy Creek Elementary in Osceola County, and Layer Elementary in Seminole County through the end of the school year.
