Orlando, FL (March 27, 2023) Nemours Children’s Health has recruited Michael Brumund, MD, FAAP, FACC, a pediatric cardiologist whose expertise provides specialized care for patients moving into adulthood who were born with a congenital heart defect. Dr. Brumund previously served as Director of Outpatient Cardiology, Director of Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension and Medical Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease program at Louisiana State University and Tulane University in New Orleans.
In his new post at Nemours, Dr. Brumund will treat fetal cardiology patients and general cardiology patients, and will work to develop a program that follows those patients into adulthood, which complements the adult congenital cardiology program at the Nemours Children’s Health program in Delaware Valley. With its established adult congenital program in Delaware, Nemours Children’s Health has been able to offer patients as they grew into adulthood the multidisciplinary specialists they need at every step in their continuation of comprehensive care.
Establishing such a program that spans specialties ensures that patients and families can continue to find support enterprise-wide throughout Nemours Children’s. These include specialties spanning cardiac anesthesiologists, intensivists and advanced imaging who are adept at ensuring excellent outcomes for interventions, and psychologists, nurses, and social workers who comprise a support team. And, as patients age, Nemours works with the patient as they move into adulthood to ensure quality of life and reproductive health.
“With the advances in the treatment of congenital heart disease often present at birth, many patients now live longer lives, and well into adulthood,” said Peter Wearden, MD, PhD, Director of Nemours Cardiac Center, Florida and Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida.
“Congenital heart disease patients can fall into a gap between pediatric providers most familiar with their heart disease and adult providers who typically address heart conditions of age and environmental factors,” said Gul Dadlani, MD, Chief of Cardiology at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida. “We at Nemours Children’s Health are committed to seeing the successful transition of those patients cared for as children into healthy and successful adulthood.”
“The adult congenital population is a large, growing population. In fact, there are more adults with congenital heart disease than there are children being born with structural congenital heart defects,” explained Dr. Brumund. “A thorough understanding the long-term consequences of the congenital aspect of the disease process and the complex surgical or catheter-based interventions are critically important to ensure the health of this unique population.
“I look forward to developing collaborations and professional relationships with adult healthcare providers across multiple subspecialties to support the best care for these patients.
A native of Georgia, Dr. Brumund earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Emory University. He received his Doctor of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency and his pediatric cardiology fellowship training and then joined the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia.
Following, he was in private practice for 17 years before joining The Heart Center at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. Dr. Brumund has demonstrated the ability to foster collaborations among community partners to create a network of care for adult congenital heart patients. He will spend the next several years doing the same at Nemours Children’s Health across Florida, said Dr. Wearden.
Dr. Brumund’s clinical interests include the evaluation and management of recurrent syncope and heart murmurs. His research interests center around the evaluation and management of pulmonary hypertension in patients with airway anomalies and underlying chronic lung disease.
Dr. Brumund and his wife are relocating to Central Florida. They have four children.
