Nemours Children’s Health, Delaware Valley, Receives Third Consecutive Magnet Designation

(Wilmington, Del., June 9, 2022) — Nemours Children’s Health, Delaware Valley has attained Magnet recognition for the third time from the American Nurses Credentialing Center ‘s Magnet Recognition Program®, designated since 2012. The Magnet credential is the highest national honor for professional nursing practice which has been achieved by only 9% of America’s 6,000 hospitals. Nemours is distinguished as one of only 265 hospitals or 4% that have achieved Magnet status three times or more. The designation includes Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware and its ambulatory sites throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

“After two of the most challenging years in health care, we are proud to be receiving the Magnet designation for the third time,” said Dr. Jane M. Mericle, Executive Vice President, Chief Nursing Executive, Patient Operating Officer at Nemours Children’s Health, Delaware. “Nemours’ exemplary nursing program, interprofessional collaboration and the quality of care delivered to our patients is only achievable because of our entire team’s ongoing commitment to the Nemours’ mission of creating the healthiest generations of children.”

To obtain this designation, Nemours’ passed a rigorous and lengthy process that demanded widespread participation from Nemours leadership and clinical teams. Nemours was evaluated based on the Magnet Model which is comprised of various elements deemed essential to delivering superior patient care including quality of nursing leadership and coordination, collaboration across specialties, as well as processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care. During the on-site appraisal visit, appraisers commented on how “throughout the site visit, clinical nurses were enthusiastic in verifying, clarifying, and amplifying the sources and provided numerous examples of how the Magnet Journey has positively affected patient care, outcomes, and the work environment.”

Magnet recognition is the gold standard for nursing excellence and provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark for measuring quality of care. In addition, U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care. Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities including higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, lower risk of 30-day mortality and higher job satisfaction among nurses. The Magnet Model also provides a framework for nursing practice, research, and measurement of outcomes.
