WILMINGTON, Del. (April 12, 2023) -- The shooting April 8 at Christiana Mall in Newark, Delaware, was a tragic event and a reminder about the prevalence of gun violence in our communities. Gun violence is quickly becoming the number one killer of children and teens in America.
Nemours Children’s Health is committed to gun safety, which is why this year we joined other leading health providers across Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, as part of the “It Doesn’t Kill to Ask,” campaign focused on providing caregivers, parents, and community members with tools and resources to speak up about safe gun storage.
Nemours Children’s also is committed to working with state and federal officials on policy and legislation – such as the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – focused on making communities safer for kids. We believe all children and youth have the right be raised in safe, nurturing environments.
We know that investing in children’s health is the single most powerful means to ensure the healthiest generations of children and a better future for our country.
Social determinants of health – including experiencing community violence – can directly impact the health and well-being of children and youth.
