Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children Receives Kohl’s Grant
$100,000 to be Used to Support Mental Health Needs for Children in Delaware Valley

[WILMINGTON, DE] [April 22, 2019] — Nemours Children’s Health System (Nemours) is using its $100,000 grant from Kohl’s Cares to help meet the mental health needs of children in the Delaware Valley.

During the first year of its Kohl’s Cares grant, Nemours secured a dedicated full-time staff member to collaborate and connect with local agencies and individual providers to create a seamless referral process for children who need mental health services. The hospital also provided high-quality workshops and follow up consultations to community mental health providers as a way to share expertise and information about evidence-based treatments. Providers who participated in the workshops received an online resource manual to help them better assist with necessary referrals.

Mental health was the top need identified by a community health needs assessment conducted by Nemours in 2016. The assessment revealed that not only was there a significant gap in mental health services for children and adolescents, but that parents were often unaware of the services that already exist in their community.

“We are very grateful to Kohl’s for helping us meet this community need,” says Dr. Jennifer Shroff Pendley, director of psychology at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. “As a result of Kohl’s generous support, we have been able to provide training to almost 150 Delaware and Pennsylvania behavioral health providers. As we build relationships among community providers, we are working to ensure that children and families get the support they need to address their emotional and behavioral health.”

Kohl's has donated more than $1.1 million, including support for the Kohl’s Healthy Kids Injury Prevention Program. Kohl's commitment to Nemours is made possible through the Kohl's Cares Cause Merchandise Program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and soft toys, and donates 100 percent of net profit to family health and wellness initiatives nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one.
