Nemours Institute for Clinical Excellence Receives Second Consecutive Accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare

Wilmington, Del. (April 29, 2024) — Nemours Children’s Health, Delaware Valley announced that its Nemours Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has once again attained accreditation through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). This recognition is Nemours Children’s second consecutive five-year accreditation in the areas of Teaching/Education and Systems Integration.

As of 2023, NICE is one of 202 programs to be fully accredited by SSH and one of 15 accredited in the specific areas of Teaching/Education and Systems Integration in the world. The Society’s Accreditation Council has once again voted Nemours as one of the top programs with exemplars found during accreditation reviews.

“It is an honor to be consistently recognized for our outstanding simulation-based programs,” said Maria Carmen Diaz, MD, Medical Director of Nemours Institute for Clinical Excellence, Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware. “This achievement emphasizes the impact that our simulation programs have toward improving the quality of care as well as the spaces, systems, processes and flow of Nemours Children’s Health.”

In 2018, NICE became one of just over 100 fully accredited simulation programs in the world and received additional recognition as one of the most esteemed newly accredited programs. Every five years, Nemours completes an intense review  process which includes a 2,600-page written application, video submissions of the program’s work and an on-site survey conducted by the SSH Simulation Accreditation Review Team.

NICE covers all simulation-based services as well as all American Heart Association (AHA) and Emergency Nurse Association (ENA) certifications across Nemours Children’s Health, Delaware Valley. NICE specializes in hands-on and critical thinking skills, clinical decision making, teamwork, effective communication and crisis resource management. This is done through a safe, risk-free, supportive, encouraging and collaborative environment.

Simulation programs are groups with dedicated resources, both personnel and equipment, whose mission is specifically targeted toward improving patient safety and outcomes through assessment, research, advocacy and education using simulation technologies and methodologies. To be accredited by SSH is to be recognized as a program that demonstrates compliance with the established core and area standards, has a minimum of two years of experience in the functional areas, and aligns with the Society’s goal to improve performance and reduce errors in patient care using simulation methodologies.

As a result of this achievement, the Society invited Diaz to highlight the NICE program during the Exemplary Practices in SSH Accreditation presentation at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare. This is Diaz’s seventh presentation of scientific abstracts and workshops accepted at this conference.
