Nemours Children’s Health, Delaware Valley Announces Suken A. Shah, MD, as The Shands/MacEwen Endowed Chair of Orthopedics and Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery

(WILMINGTON, Del., August. 10, 2023) —Dr. Suken A. Shah has been named The Shands/MacEwen Endowed Chair of Orthopedics and Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Nemours Children’s Health, Delaware Valley.

With more than 20 years of service at Nemours, Dr. Shah has amassed a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the care of children with both congenital and acquired musculoskeletal conditions.

Dr. Shah’s academic track record includes more than 4,000 operative cases with a focus on complex spine procedures, 250 invited lectures, 225 peer-reviewed publications, and 25 competitive awards, all while mentoring more than 40 aspiring fellows who are now pediatric orthopedic surgeons practicing worldwide. These academic achievements have earned him widespread recognition and respect as an international leader in pediatric orthopedic surgery.

“After more than two decades at Nemours Children’s, I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Endowed Chair of Orthopedics and furthering Nemours’ mission to create the healthiest generations of children,” Dr. Shah said. “As Chair, I look forward to collaborating with my talented teammates to advance the Department of Orthopedics, expand access for patients with orthopedic conditions and ensure Nemours’ Department of Orthopedics is recognized for its clinical outcomes, scientific discoveries and academic leadership.”

Since 2020, Dr. Shah has served as Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedics. He has also served as Chief of the Spine and Scoliosis Division of Orthopedics since 2010 and as Clinical Fellowship Director of Orthopedics since 2009. He holds national leadership positions with the Scoliosis Research Society, the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, directs the International Pediatric Orthopaedic Symposium (IPOSâ), and leads the Harms Study Group and Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation, dedicated to scientific discovery and improving outcomes from pediatric spine surgery.

Dr. Shah graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in science and subsequently completed his medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and his residency in orthopedic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University and the Rothman Institute where he now serves as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatrics. He matriculated into his fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery at the then Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and joined the Nemours faculty in 2000 where he has remained committed to the Nemours legacy of excellence in pediatric orthopedic care.
