AAP 2023: Nemours Children’s Presents Research on Body Image & Sports Attrition, Social Determinants & Obesity, and Autism Screening in Primary Care
Studies Report Fresh Approaches to Keeping Children Healthy Dr. Steven Selbst to Receive Prestigious AAP Award for Emergency Medicine

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (October 20, 2023) – Researchers from Nemours Children’s Health will present findings from a range of studies, and Nemours physician Steven Selbst, MD, will receive the Jim Seidel Distinguished Service Award for emergency medicine contributions at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference & Exhibition, Oct. 20 – 24 in Washington, DC.

“Nemours’ vision is to go well beyond medicine – to help children everywhere stay healthy and grow into healthy adults,” said Dr. Kirk Reichard, clinical director of the Division of General Surgery, Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware, and president of AAP’s Delaware Chapter. “Our researchers are finding ways to better integrate mental and physical health, understand psychosocial effects on kids’ sports participation, and bring services from a specialty setting to primary care, where more children may benefit.”

Nemours Children’s researchers from a variety of pediatric specialties will share findings on topics that affect many families, including:

  • The interplay of social media, body image and gender bias on sports attrition: pediatric sports medicine specialist Cassidy Foley Davelaar, DO, FAAP
  • A new model to integrate autism screening into primary care, allowing earlier diagnosis and intervention: pediatricians Meghan Harrison, DO, and Brittany Perry, DO
  • Caring for children after a cardiac arrest: cardiologists Suhasini Chico, MD, Jigar Chauhan, MD, Nicholas Slamon, MD
  • How injury affects children’s mental health: psychologist Julia Price, PhD
  • The intersection of the social determinants of health and obesity in children and teens: Clinical Director, Division of General Surgery, Kirk W. Reichard, MD

Additionally, Dr. Steven M. Selbst, pediatric emergency medicine physician at Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware, will receive AAP’s highly prestigious Jim Seidel Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the field of pediatric emergency medicine.
