Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida Welcomes its New Class of Pediatric Residents
Future Pediatricians Welcomed with White Coats at Traditional Ceremony

ORLANDO, Fla. (June 21, 2023) – Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida, welcomed another diverse group of medical students to be trained as future pediatricians in its residency program with a traditional ceremony. Each of the 12 physicians in training donned their white coats at the event, marking the start of their three years of hands-on experience to build clinical competence.

Now in its fifth year, the Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida pediatric residency program provides robust clinical training, engages participation in research, and encourages opportunities to serve the community through advocacy.

“The class is composed of physicians from multiple medical schools nationally and Puerto Rico, ready to learn from our world-class faculty and researchers,” said Corinne Bria, MD, interim director of the program.  “These physicians reflect Nemours Children’s commitment to caring for the diverse communities we serve, which is a priority for our program as we address health care’s ever-changing landscape.”

“Now in its fifth year, we are also celebrating the achievements of the second group of graduating residents, who have just completed the three-year training program. They are contributing to the shortage of physicians in Central Florida needed to care for our growing population,” said Dr. Heather Fagan, an award-winning medical educator who developed the graduate medical education infrastructure at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

In July, Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida will also welcome its first ACGME accredited pediatric subspecialty fellows in Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine and Endocrinology with other programs in development for accreditation.

Competitive programs across the enterprise

Nemours Children’s Health offers pediatric residency programs at both of its freestanding hospitals, and has longstanding success at nurturing residents and supporting them through vigorous residency training. Residents have opportunities to work closely with expert faculty in their fields. Diversity in our patient populations means that trainees learn to care for patients and families from all backgrounds when rendering both routine and complex health care.

For its new class, Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida had 1,142 applications for the 12 positions. At Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, there were 996 total applications for 25 positions. At Nemours Children’s Health, Jacksonville, there were 970 applications for the 14 pediatric slots.

Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida recently honored its second class of residents with a graduation celebration recognizing the residents for their many contributions to improving children’s health through clinical practice, research and service during their three years of training.

The second graduating class at Nemours will be serving children and their families as both general pediatricians and subspecialty fellows. Five residents will be caring for children as general pediatricians and five residents will be entering fellowships in allergy and immunology, infectious disease, pediatric emergency medicine, endocrinology and neonatology. Two residents will serve as chief residents.
