Nemours Announces New Pediatric General Surgery Chief

A new physician will lead the general surgery program at Nemours Children’s HospitalAdela T. Casas-Melley, MD, becomes the chief of the Division of Pediatric General Surgery starting February 9th. Prior to Nemours Dr. Casas-Melley was the chief of pediatric surgery and medical director of the Level II trauma center at Sanford Children’s Hospital in South Dakota, as well as professor of surgery at the University Of South Dakota Sanford School Of Medicine.

"Nemours has built an amazing team and an amazing facility in Orlando. It is an honor to join them," said Casas-Melley. "My focus from day one will be building and expanding world-class programs that are not widely available."

This is a return to Nemours for Casas-Melley. Previously, she served as an attending physician in the Department of Surgery at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children from 2000–2006. She earned her medical degree and completed a residency in general surgery at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, followed by a fellowship in pediatric surgery at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.

Casas-Melley has published many peer-reviewed articles and has presented her work nationally and internationally. She was awarded the "Master Clinician" designation in 2015 by the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, and in 2010 was named in the Consumer’s Research Council of America guide to America’s top surgeons.

Casas-Melley is also a 2012 graduate of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM).
